How does wireless charging work?
You’ve probably seen wireless charging in action and found yourself wondering, “how does wireless charging work?” Well, here’s everything you need to know about how wireless charging works.

Using a system called magnetic induction, magnetic energy is transferred from a charging pad to a specialised coil within the device that converts this energy into electrical power. This is the energy that charges the battery within your device.

With a majority share of the mobile phone market being controlled by Apple, you might be asking yourself specifically, “how does iPhone wireless charging work?” and “does iPhone support fast wireless charging?”.

The good news is that almost all wireless charging enabled products, including iPhones after Series 8, use the same standard of charging, known as Qi, which was developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) in 2009.

All charging pads and devices that use the Qi standard are compatible with each other regardless of manufacturer or type of device, meaning that, yes, iPhone wireless charging works the same way. The one limitation is that not all devices and chargers are capable of supporting fast wireless charging, as we will explain below.

The difference between wireless charging and wireless fast charging
The first standard of Qi wireless charging was called Basic Power Profile (BPP) and was created in 2009. BPP delivers wireless charging to devices at a power transfer rate of 5 watts, which is quite slow and takes longer than traditional wired charging.

Then, in 2015, a major breakthrough was developed in Qi with the development of Extended Power Profile (EPP), also known as wireless fast charging. This boosted the transfer rate to 15 watts without any extra loss of energy during transfer — enabling much faster charging times for supporting devices.

Even though both the phone and the fast charge wireless charger base have to be compatible with EPP for fast charging to work, EPP chargers can still charge BPP standard devices at the slower rate of 5 watts.

Is wireless fast charging safe?
Yes, fast charging is safe. The Qi standards used by all manufacturers come with strict regulations designed to avoid any damage to devices during the transfer of energy from a fast charge wireless charger pad to a device and has no more risks than traditional wired charging.

The future of wireless fast charging
